CHAPTER TWELVE

“Why are we doing this again?” I asked Emma as she sped down the cracked and winding country road in her antiquated but zippy Chevy Malibu, the trees and overgrown grass blurring past us in a never-ending stream of green.

Emma gave a halfhearted shrug, her gaze glued to the cracked road unfurling before us. “At Briggs’s beck and call once again, you mean?” she asked. “Chasing after his wild geese has become our go to hobby. Why, did you have something better to do today? I heard there’s a Bingo parlor halfway to Orlando. We could try that.”

“I know, but...” I trailed off, watching the trees blur as we whipped down the road. “It just feels different this time. Like we’re going through the motions without thinking about why.”

Emma nodded, hands tightening almost imperceptibly on the steering wheel. “You’re probably right. I don’t know, Astra. I mean, our lives have changed a lot. Mine especially, with the baby and all.” A small smile crossed her face at the mention of her son. “I miss the thrill of detective work sometimes. Tracking down leads, interrogating suspects... it’s given me a rush I haven’t felt in a while.”

“Understandable,” I said, nodding as I watched the trees fly past outside the car window. “Hunter’s amazing, but it’s got to be a tremendous change becoming a mom.”

Emma let out a small laugh, the corners of her eyes crinkling. “You can say that again. Don’t get me wrong, I love that little guy more than anything. But man, motherhood is no joke—and motherhood to a werewolf baby is not for the faint of heart. The sleepless nights, the constant worrying, the complete upheaval of your entire life and routine. It’s wild.”

She shook her head, blond hair tousling in the breeze from the cracked window. “I wouldn’t trade it for the world, though. That first moment when they placed Hunter in my arms... it was like nothing I’ve ever felt before. This primal, fierce love just flooded through me. I knew right then and there that I would do anything for my son.”

I smiled, picturing the tough-as-nails Emma melted into a puddle of mush by motherly love. “I can only imagine. It’s amazing how someone so tiny can have such an enormous impact.”

“You have no idea,” Emma said. “But enough about me. What about you? Do you ever miss your old life?”

“Sometimes I do miss it,” I admitted. “The structure and sense of purpose, if nothing else. As a soldier, I just went where I was told and followed orders. I didn’t have to think too hard about the why of it all. Though considering what happened, maybe I should have.”

“I hear you. And I know exactly what you mean.”

My mind drifted back to those days—the harsh desert sun beating down as I searched dusty streets for a rogue paranormal, the smell of smoke and sand that permeated everything, the adrenaline rush as a magic bolt whizzed by my head.

It was simple back then.

Now, back in Forkbridge, things were a lot more complicated.
